Let’s face it, Butter My Biscuit is so new, no questions have been raised yet — let alone frequently asked ones. But, if any Biscuiteers were interested in picking up some cocktail trivia to go with their hors d’oeuvres, this is the page!
Why did you start this blog?
I love food, I like goofing around with my camera, and I enjoy light writing. Besides, I need something to do in these long Maine winters. And of course, I sometimes get a little homesick for Southern stuff.
If you miss the South, why don’t you move back down there?
That’s a tricky if not complicated question, and one my family still asks. I’m a bit nomadic, moving from city to city in the name of education or career. And since I’m not a trust fund child, there’s also something to be said for being gainfully employed, which has meant being away from the homeland. Regardless of the why’s behind my ex-pat status, it doesn’t mean that I don’t want to stay connected to my Southern heritage.
What host & platform does BMB.com use?
ButterMyBiscuit is hosted by BlueHost, powered by WordPress.
What theme is used?
The theme I chose is called “Urban Elements” by Press75. Set up, logo, tweaks & enhancements were made by Eliza at TheStyleDragon.
What camera & lens do you use when taking photographs?
For my camera, I use a Canon EOS Rebel XTi — a digital SLR. The two lenses in my photo box are: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM. The macro lens is a recent purchase so that I could do indoor food photography, and truthfully I’m still riding the learning curve with that new toy. Let that be the disclaimer that goes with the statement “all photos are mine unless otherwise noted.”
What are the inspirations behind your posts?
Ah, the inspirations! I’m afraid they are rather pedestrian — usually unrequited cravings of some caliber. Or, I might have a recipe torn from a magazine that I’ve intended to try for months (or years). Also, I might have been on the phone with people who told me what their mother served for supper. And in other cases, I have some special friends who like to share bizarre food discoveries that I feel compelled to explore publicly.
Do you pre-plan your posts? Or are they impulse writings?
I’m a planner, so yes the posts are loosely framed in advance. Similar to a magazine, I’ve laid out editorial content, paralleling seasonal events or themes. I may end up adjusting the plan, but it keeps me organized and on track. But the actual post isn’t written until right before publishing – so in that sense, I do wing it a bit.
So, are the recipes yours?
Let’s just say that I’m content to recycle recipes, not create them. At best, I doctor them up a bit like many home cooks — but that’s as far as my skill set stretches.
What about your comments policy?
The policy at the moment is that the more comments, the better. I’m a neophyte at the blogging thing, and while I can project my target audience it’s a long way from really knowing who actually follows. Drop a line and let me know what I’m doing right (or wrong!). But please no naughty or mean comments — I need to keep my PG Gravatar rating!
What about advertising?
Entering into advertising relationships isn’t necessarily a bad thing (says the lady with a marketing background). Part of me — or my ego — aspires to be in a position where someone believes my site is ad worthy. But hey, I’m an unknown at this point with clicks-per-view too low to make the radar. As such, there are no grand illusions that Martha’s Circle or Saveur will be beating down my door any time soon with an endorsement or revenue generating opportunity. But a girl can dream, can’t she?
Do you review products? Are you a commercial hack?
Hmmm … no freebies have made their way to my door at this time. But, if some PR folks were to graciously forward something such as a cookbook or kitchen gadget, the operating policy would be that I would be happy to assess it, but feel no obligation to write about it. If I make any product plug on this site, it is because it is a tried and true product that I believe in and would purchase on my own.
Can I link to your site? Will you exchange links with me?
Link away … with attribution, please. But, no thanks — I’d like to stay away from reciprocal linking arrangements.
